PE Self-Adhesive Labels: Features, Applications & Printing Guide

PE self-adhesive labels are composite label materials made from polyethylene (PE) film as the face stock, coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive on the back, and lined with a release liner. PE is a thermoplastic polymer known for its excellent flexibility, water resistance, and chemical resistance, making it one of the most widely used film face materials in the self-adhesive label industry.

1. What Are PE Self-Adhesive Labels?

Compared to paper labels, PE labels are softer, more durable, and capable of conforming to curved and deformable packaging surfaces. This makes them highly popular in the personal care, food, pharmaceutical, and industrial sectors.

2. Key Features of PE Self-Adhesive Labels

Feature

Description

Excellent Flexibility

Soft material that conforms closely to curved surfaces, tubes, and squeezable bottles – labels stay attached without curling or detaching

Water & Oil Resistance

Good resistance to water and oil, suitable for humid, greasy, or wet environments

Low Temperature Performance

Remains flexible at low temperatures (-30°C to -20°C) without becoming brittle

Chemical Resistance

Good resistance to weak acids, weak bases, salt solutions, and some solvents

Non-toxic & Eco-friendly

Odorless and non-toxic; some grades meet food contact and environmental regulations

Good Printability

Suitable for various printing methods and ink systems after corona or coating treatment

3. Important Considerations in Printing

Printing on PE labels differs significantly from paper labels. Here are the key points to pay attention to:

1. Surface Treatment is Essential
PE film has low surface energy, making ink adhesion difficult. Before printing, corona treatment or selecting top-coated PE material is necessary to increase surface tension (recommended ≥38 dyne/cm) and ensure good ink adhesion.

2. Use Specialized Inks
Use inks specifically designed for PE film, such as flexo, gravure, or UV inks. Standard paper inks often fail to adhere properly, dry inadequately, or peel off on PE surfaces. UV inks are a common choice due to their fast curing and good adhesion.

3. Control Printing Tension
PE film is extensible. Improper tension control can cause material stretching and distortion, affecting registration accuracy and die-cutting dimensional stability. Lower tension settings combined with appropriate drying temperatures are recommended.

4. Monitor Drying Temperature
PE film has limited heat resistance (typically around 60–80°C). Excessive drying temperatures may cause shrinkage, deformation, or curling. Set drying temperatures based on the material's thermal characteristics.

5. Die-cutting & Waste Removal
PE is soft and requires sharp, properly angled dies to prevent stringy edges or cutting through the liner. Waste removal speed should be matched to the material's extensibility to avoid labels being pulled off.

4. Applications of PE Self-Adhesive Labels

PE labels are used in a wide range of applications requiring flexibility and moisture resistance:

Application Area

Specific Uses

Personal Care & Cosmetics

Labels for squeezable shampoo, body wash, and hand soap bottles; cosmetic tube labels

Food & Beverage

Frozen food, chilled drinks, cooking oil labels; food packaging requiring low-temperature or moisture resistance

Pharmaceutical & Medical

Medicine bottle labels, medical device identification, low-temperature storage sample labels

Industrial & Logistics

Lubricant drums, chemical containers, outdoor equipment labels; warehouse shelf labels

Household & Garden

Detergent, laundry liquid, garden fertilizer packaging labels

Recyclable Packaging

PE labels designed for recyclable packaging, supporting de-labeling in recycling streams

PE self-adhesive labels, with their excellent flexibility, water resistance, and low-temperature performance, are an ideal choice for labeling curved and flexible packaging in the personal care, food, and pharmaceutical industries. When printing PE labels, special attention must be given to surface treatment, ink selection, tension control, drying temperature, and die-cutting processes.

As demand for flexible and recyclable packaging continues to grow, the application prospects for PE self-adhesive labels are set to expand even further.
